Centre Blocks Five OTT Platforms Over Alleged Obscene Content
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has blocked five online streaming platforms for allegedly hosting obscene content, according to media reports. The action was taken following multiple complaints and after what officials described as due procedural review.
Platforms Blocked
As per reports, the platforms blocked include:
- MoodXVIP
- Koyal Playpro
- Digi Movieplex
- Feel
- Jugnu
The decision was reportedly taken under provisions of the Information Technology Act 2000 and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, which regulate unlawful and harmful online content.
Previous Actions Against OTT Platforms
This is not the first time the Centre has taken action against digital streaming platforms. In July 2025, the MIB ordered the blocking of 25 OTT platforms for allegedly streaming obscene and vulgar material.
Among the platforms reportedly blocked at that time were:
- Ullu
- ALTT
- Big Shots App
- NeonX VIP
- Desiflix
Officials stated that the directive followed consultations with multiple government departments and stakeholders.
Government’s Position
According to media reports quoting officials:
- Some platforms were hosting graphic sexual content and explicit visuals.
- Certain shows allegedly lacked meaningful storyline or context.
- There were allegations that some previously blocked platforms resumed operations by launching new domains.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had earlier flagged some OTT platforms for alleged violations related to child protection norms.
Advisory and Compliance
In February 2025, the Ministry had issued an advisory urging OTT platforms to ensure strict compliance with Indian laws and content regulations. The latest action is being seen as part of ongoing enforcement under the IT Rules, 2021.
As of now, none of the five newly blocked platforms have issued an official public statement.
Authorities have reiterated that digital platforms operating in India are required to comply with content and community standards prescribed under law. Further updates are expected if responses are issued by the affected platforms.
