Man Arrested for Sending Over 50 Hoax Bomb Threat Emails Across India
Police have arrested a 28-year-old man accused of sending more than 50 hoax bomb threat emails to institutions across India. The arrest was made by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch along with the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Unit after tracking the digital trail of the threatening messages.
The accused, identified as Sourav Biswas from New Barrackpore in West Bengal, is currently on remand as investigators probe his motives and possible accomplices.
Threat Emails Sent Across Multiple Cities
According to investigators, Biswas allegedly sent more than 50 emails over the past few days targeting locations across several Indian cities, including:
- Schools
- Metro stations
- Courts
- Financial institutions
Among the targets were institutions in Mumbai, Delhi, Gujarat and other states. Security agencies conducted emergency checks and evacuations at several places after receiving the threats.
Panic Triggered in Mumbai
On February 27, multiple schools and metro stations in Mumbai received threatening emails warning of possible bomb blasts within two days.
The message triggered immediate security alerts, leading authorities to conduct precautionary searches and evacuations. A case was registered at Dindoshi Police Station, and cyber experts began analysing the email’s origin.
Digital Trail Led to West Bengal
Cyber investigators traced the email activity to the New Barrackpore area of West Bengal. Police teams were then dispatched to locate and apprehend the suspect.
During the investigation, officials also found that the same accused had allegedly sent a similar bomb threat email in Ahmedabad on February 16, prompting an earlier case registered by local cyber crime authorities.
Acting on intelligence inputs and digital tracking, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch detained the suspect on March 1.
Mumbai Police Takes Custody
Following the arrest, Mumbai Police took custody of the accused as part of the ongoing investigation related to the threat emails sent in the city.
Officials said the suspect is being interrogated to determine:
- His motive behind sending the emails
- The technology and tools used
- Whether other individuals were involved
Investigation Continues
Police say preliminary questioning suggests the threats may have been intended to create panic. However, investigators are examining all possibilities, including whether the accused had any accomplices or connections to a wider network.
Authorities have reiterated that hoax threats are treated as serious offences, as they divert security resources and create unnecessary panic among the public.
