Jack Swilling of Wickenburg founded the town in 1867. Phoenix was officially recognized on May 4, 1868.

Phoenix was established in 1867 as a farming community near the confluence of the Salt and Gila Rivers, and became a city in 1881.

Schooling for the youth of Phoenix began in 1871. About 20 children studied under the guidance of Jean Rudolph Darroch.
